The Hidden Dangers of Asbestos and Chemicals in Urbex

Urban exploration (urbex) is fascinating, but some dangers are invisible. Among them, asbestos and leftover chemicals are the most harmful. According to the WHO, 125 million people worldwide are still exposed to asbestos at work. In urbex, exposure is accidental, but very real.

What is asbestos and why is it dangerous?

Asbestos was used in construction until the 1990s as insulation. The problem is that its tiny fibers are invisible and easy to inhale.
👉 According to the French INRS, asbestos causes over 3,000 deaths every year in France (lung cancer, mesothelioma).

In urbex, just walking in a crumbling building can release asbestos fibers into the air.

Chemicals in abandoned places

  • Factories: solvents, acids, hydrocarbons.
  • Hospitals: lab products, used syringes.
  • Farms or storage sites: pesticides, fertilizers.

According to Public Health France, chemicals like chlorinated solvents can cause immediate respiratory irritation and increase long-term cancer risk.

My field experience

After more than 1,000 explorations, I’ve had to leave sites because of chemical hazards.

  • “In Italy, inside an abandoned paint factory, the air was full of solvents. Even with a mask, it burned my throat. We left quickly to avoid passing out.”
  • “In a French hospital, the crumbling walls still contained asbestos. Since then, I always bring an FFP2 mask.”

How to protect yourself

  • Always wear an FFP2 or FFP3 mask in closed areas.
  • Avoid touching or moving fragile materials.
  • Never stay in a place with a strong chemical smell.
  • Explore with friends and limit exposure time.

👉 Tip: If your eyes or throat start to burn, leave immediately.

Can you know in advance if a spot has asbestos?

No. Asbestos is invisible. In France, only official inspections (DTA – Asbestos Technical File) can confirm it. Since most urbex spots are abandoned, you should always assume asbestos is present.

Conclusion

Urbex is not only dangerous because of collapsing buildings. The real invisible threats are asbestos and leftover chemicals.
By following simple rules and being cautious, it’s possible to keep exploring without putting your health at risk.
