🔎 How to Find Urbex Near Me in 2026 (Complete Guide)
Every urban explorer has asked this question at some point:
"How do I find urbex near me — quickly, without wasting hours?"
In 2026, there are several effective methods to discover abandoned places around you: simple techniques, free tools, reliable maps and key tips to avoid common mistakes — demolished sites, fake addresses, heavily guarded private property.
Here's the complete guide to finding abandoned places near you — in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Spain and beyond.
1️⃣ Using Google Maps and Google Earth Smartly
Abandoned places often leave visible clues from above.
🔍 On Google Maps:
- collapsed roofs
- overgrown empty parking lots
- isolated buildings surrounded by tall grass
- half-deserted industrial zones
- old railway lines
- partially boarded-up villages
🌍 On Google Earth:
- compare images across different years
- spot buildings where vehicles gradually disappear
- look for changes: empty pools, deserted parking lots, missing windows
The advantage: you can detect abandoned places within 15 minutes from home — without leaving your desk.
2️⃣ Visual Signs of an Abandoned Place in Real Life
While walking or driving, these clues are reliable indicators:
- torn or missing curtains
- broken windows
- shutters closed for years
- overflowing mailboxes
- sagging rooflines
- completely uncontrolled vegetation
- outdated "private property – construction site" signs
These details often indicate real, long-term abandonment — sometimes for decades.

Some areas are far more likely to contain urbex spots than others:
🏭 1. Old Industrial Zones
Foundries, warehouses, textile factories, decommissioned logistics hubs.
🏚️ 2. Rural Areas and Isolated Villages

… nothing beats a verified and up-to-date map.
